FALL/WINTER GARDENING OUTDOOR CLASS
learn fall & winter gardening from master gardeners & by actually working in one another's gardens every Saturday 10-WEEK FALL GARDENING CLASS On hiatus until March, 2010 MEN’S FALL/WINTER GARDENING CLASS: We’ll learn how to plant fava & crimson clover, two of the best nitrogen-fixing cover crops, and why its important to protect soil with compost &/or cover crops before the rain & cold of winter arrive. We’ll also learn how to create a compost pile and the key ingredients to create rich, fertile compost for next spring’s garden. Now is the time to prepare compost so it can be decomposing all winter. You don’t have to have a lot of experience or land, just a desire to learn from master gardeners how to grow fresh greens, herbs, and/or root vegetables. Every Saturday Manifest’s Gardening & Food Sustainability Team will learn about one of the topics listed below from a master gardener, and then practice by working in one another’s gardens. Imagine how much you’ll get done if you have 10 men helping you, and sharing seeds, tools, and know-how! FALL GARDEN TEAM SCHEDULE LOCATION: We meet at a different garden every week; so please RSVP (below), and we’ll let you know where we’re meeting and car-pooling & mass transit options; if you want directions last minute, call 503-223-8822 x2 before 9:30 am on Saturday. WHAT IT’S LIKE: “I was looking for inspiration and kind of a spark to get spurred on…I’ve been committed to amateur gardening since I bought my house in 2000 but I’ve only had a small few vegetables in it during this time…and I wanted to do more with it. Community was part of it. I wanted to meet some people…Learn techniques and expand my knowledge… I’ve enjoyed the people, the positive energy, the knowledge, the different resources that people bring…and the refreshments. Lewis had some homemade carrot muffins the other day..And Tom Winterrowd served some nice fruit. The group has more than met my needs and goals.”—Aaron Andrade, Gardening Team Member CO-FACILITATORS: Michael Johnston is the former long-time owner of a nursery in the Midwest who is now creating a Sustainable Landscape Design company in Portland; Aaron Andrade is a long-time Portland gardener.
